Our speed test uses the website inmotionhosting.com as the target and has been tested with the Bitcatcha server speed checker.
Average Load Time / Uptime
Uptime is an incredibly important aspect of the hosting experience. If your website is down, clients or customers will be unable to find you or access your products or services. That is a nightmare scenario. Thankfully, InMotion showed dependable uptime in my testing.
I use a website monitoring tool to track my test sites’ uptime over a 14-day period. Every 15 minutes, the tool pings my website and sends me an email if it is unable to contact the site for at least one minute. The data revealed that my InMotion site went down briefly during the testing period. Overall, InMotion is stable and dependable.
There are four main types of web hosting offered by InMotion namely Shared Business hosting, VPS Hosting, Dedicated Hosting, Reseller Hosting and Managed Hosting.
Shared Hosting Package
Shared Hosting: Their shared hosting, also referred to by them as “business hosting,” comes with three plans:
- Launch plan: This plan starts at $4.89 per month. It supports 2 websites, 2 MySQL databases, 6 parked domains and 25 subdomains.
- Power plan: This plan starts at $6.29 per month. It supports 6 websites, 6 MySQL databases, 26 parked domains and 100 subdomains.
- Pro plan: This plan starts at $10.49 per month. This plan supports unlimited websites, unlimited MySQL databases, unlimited parked domains and unlimited subdomains.
- All shared hosting plans come with unlimited storage and bandwidth, and they are backed up by their generous 90-day money back guarantee.
InMotion’s rival also offers unlimited domains, email, storage, and monthly data transfers, and it adds the choice of Linux- or Windows-based servers. The Windows option is an important one if your site has software that runs on an ASP.NET framework.
Their shared hosting is great for static websites, database-driven content management systems, and custom applications. It works faster with SSH & develop in PHP, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Ruby, Perl, and Python.
You can quickly build beautiful websites with their free drag-and-drop website builder. Get WordPress, Joomla, or PrestaShop installed for you during checkout. It has free domain name included – $14.99 value!
VPS Web Hosting Package
InMotion offers solid VPS hosting that starts at $24.99 per month and tops out at $59.99 per month. You get respectable top-level specs, including 8GB of RAM, 6TB of monthly data transfers, and 260GB of storage. Unlimited email, domains, websites, and MySQL databases are included, too. InMotion has a good VPS offering.
Their state-of-the-art Linux SSD VPS Hosting servers come equipped with an arsenal of features, including a cloud-powered infrastructure built for real-time redundancy, free server management, a free cPanel license, CentOS and LAMP stack, live-state snapshots and much more.

Dedicated Web Hosting Package
Their top of the line Linux Dedicated Servers can be configured to fit the exact needs of your enterprise. They have single and dual processor dedicated servers with FREE SSDs to give you scalability, flexibility, and reliability. We have two state-of-the-art data centers, one in Washington D.C., and the other near One Wilshire in Los Angeles.
They’re fully managed; custom dedicated servers come installed, out-of-the-box, with LAMP stack. The Dedicated Server Managed Hosting team proactively monitors your server, and is available for custom configurations. Unlike many hosts, they include both cPanel and WHM free with all Dedicated Servers.
WordPress Web Hosting Package
If you’re looking for WordPress hosting, InMotion offers solid packages. The plans aren’t true managed WordPress hosting, though they offer many of its elements.
The web host’s Linux-based, WordPress-optimized servers (starting at $4.89 per month) come with the content management system preinstalled, and offer free daily backups and automatic software updates.
On the plus side, InMotion’s WordPress hosting tosses most of the usual limitations to the wind. It offers unlimited websites, disk space, and monthly data transfers. Many of the
Many of the truly managed WordPress hosts we’ve reviewed have caps in place that limit their plans in some regard. InMotion also offers the BoldGrid website builder for your convenience.
Reseller Web Hosting Package
If you’re looking to get into the web hosting game for yourself, but you don’t want to spin up your own servers or worry about providing bandwidth for them, check out InMotion’s reseller packages. The three plans, starting at $27.99 per month, don’t offer unlimited monthly data transfers and storage, but you do get unlimited email, which is a nice touch.
The entry-level R-1000S plan comes with 90GB of storage, 800GB of monthly data transfers, and unlimited cPanel. The mid-tier R-2000S plan ups the storage to 120GB, and the monthly data transfers to 1,200GB.
R-3000S boasts 160GB of storage, and 1,600GB of monthly data transfers. InMotion provides 24/7 customer support, too, and gives you a choice of Linux- or Windows-based servers
You know you’re doing something right when you’re one of the most awarded businesses in your industry – but InMotion doesn’t let it get to their head too much. InMotion performs well on the big three areas of uptime, speed, and support. They also provide a few additional features which can make your experience all the more enjoyable.
Fast loading times aren’t just great for user experience. Speed is also factored into Google’s algorithm for dictating where in the rankings you’ll show up (you know, that whole SEO thing). And speed has one of the biggest impacts on your bottom line, forcing half your traffic to bounce if your site doesn’t load within two seconds.InMotion followed their strong uptime performance with an average page loading times of
InMotion followed their strong uptime performance with an average page loading times of 596ms, or 77% faster than the competition’s average of 1052ms.
Frequent Discounts (Including Free Domain Name)
All of these positive benefits come at a cost. Traditionally, InMotion is among the more expensive options out there. However currently, they appear to be price matching much of the competition starting at only $5.99 per month, making them an excellent option at a good price. Unfortunately, there is a big catch to this price, which we’ll touch on in just a second.
Tons of Integrations & Apps
Another claim InMotion makes on their website is that they’re a leader in supporting Open Source projects. Again, those boasts are backed up with a portfolio of over 310 applications. You can find everything from popular content management systems like WordPress and Drupal to shopping carts or eCommerce systems like Prestashop and Magento.
Premium Sucuri Plugin for WordPress Users
InMotion’s WordPress hosting comes with the Sucuri security plugin that regularly scans your sites for exploits and security risks, in addition to ongoing remote backups, anti-spam, and anti-virus protection.
Free Site Transfer
The good news is that like other web hosts, InMotionHosting offers to transfer your site for free from your current host. The bad news, however, is that they DO NOT promise zero downtime during the migration process (which other hosts regularly guarantee).
Great for E-commerce Support
InMotion is one of the few web hosts with active partnerships between Prestashop and other leading eCommerce services (SiteGround being the one of the other). They make your eCommerce experience even better by providing easy integrations with payment processors, helping you side-step an otherwise huge pain in the neck.
Free Data Backups
Many web hosts charge for backups. Or they include ridiculous Terms of Service clauses that make their backup service useless for most customers. InMotion hosting is different. They will regularly create a backup of your account up to 10GB, and also provide an easy-to-use tool to manually backup your site.
Google Apps Integration
Last but not least, InMotion also provides a handy little three-step wizard for connecting with Google Apps. Some web hosts (GoDaddy comes to mind) force you to pay for their subpar email clients. While setting up Google App integration to use your new domain with Gmail, Google Docs, Drive, and more isn’t exactly brain surgery, it can be a frustrating process if you’ve never edited MX records before.
Lots of Log-Ins
You access your general account settings from the Account Management Panel (AMP), but managing the website requires a separate cPanel login. Eventually, I contacted web chat support, but the person I chatted with referred me to email support. Thankfully, I got a quick response, and after I supplied my AMP password, the support team was able to set me up.
The website builder requires yet another login and password, but building a website is an otherwise straightforward affair. You have three site types to choose from (site, blog, or photo gallery), you can select themes and colors, and you can pick the types of pages you’d like to include on your site.
In addition to standard pages such as Contact Us and About Us, you can add special pages, such as Flash Intro and eShop. Next, you can add a map, poll, RSS reader, or script module into your pages.
Unfortunately, the Premium Website Builder doesn’t produce particularly attractive pages; my site looked dated. Alternatively, you can use WordPress to create your site.
The service has many e-commerce options. You can add an eShop page using the Premium Web Builder and build a simple store. Payment options are limited, though. You can also download OpenCart or PrestaShop (both free) for a more robust store.
I gave OpenCart a try; it offers a comprehensive dashboard for tracking customers and sales and multiple shipping and payment options. This beats other hosts like iPower and JustHost, which charge an extra monthly fee for e-commerce. Unfortunately, e-commerce isn’t available with the basic Launch plan.
Control Panel Tools
InMotion uses the standard cPanel setup but offers more features than you typically see. Even in a basic package, you have access to the advanced features, like custom cron jobs, phpMyAdmin databases and Softaculous.
You can install WordPress, PrestaShop or Joomla when you purchase the web host and it will come preinstalled. Each of these tools is extremely helpful in smoothly running your site and helped boost this web host’s usability score to 80%.
The Launch plan includes eCommerce capabilities. You can select from several compatible shopping cart programs and use one-click install to add them to your website. InMotion Web Hosting offers both a free domain name for the first year of service and a free domain transfer.
They also include $250 in advertising credits to be used on Google AdWords, Bing and Yahoo.
Hosting Performance and Speed
Their customer support is not the only thing InMotion Web Hosting excels at. The speed and performance of their servers are also very impressive. To date, InMotion has never had a major outage and they have an average uptime of 99.97%, which is pretty darn good for a service of their size.
Furthermore, unlike many other shared web hosting services out there, they do not oversell their servers. In other words, they do not allow too many sites to be hosted on the same server.
Instead, they keep each server limited to what it can legitimately handle, meaning that even if multiple sites hit peak traffic at the same time, the server can handle it better.
Besides the above there are a number of more unique features that InMotion employs to ensure uptime, speed and security for their hosting customers:
- SSD drives for all of their servers. First off, every single server is supported by SSD (Solid-State Drive) drives, instead of a traditional HDD (hard disk drive) drive. Because SSD drives are chip-based (non-mechanical), instead of disk-based, it is significantly faster at retrieving the stored data.
This means faster loading times and faster data retrieval for those utilizing your website, which means fewer people leaving your site because it takes too long. According to InMotion, and internal testing they performed:
- SSDs perform about 20 times faster than HDDs.
- SSDs were able to push through about 65% more data from the server.
- During times of high I/O requests, these data numbers rose to approximately 95% when compared to HDDs.
Multiple data centers and Max Speed Zones. Another unique element of InMotion is that instead of having one data center that serves the entire country, they have multiple data centers.
When purchasing their services, you get to choose a location that best serves you (based on where the bulk of your customers or visitors are from). To see which data center works best for your location, they even have a file download test you can use on their website to compare which center gives you faster service!
Because they have multiple data centers, they also have what they dub Max Speed Zones that refer to geographical locations within a certain range of their centers. If you are within their Max Speed Zone, they promise that your website and email can run up to 6 times faster.
Strong Focus on Security
InMotion takes security seriously as they will monitor server security 24/7. Your websites are covered by DDoS protection, advanced firewall systems like ModSecurity as well as custom firewall rules.
Free Private SSL Certificates
As of July 28 2017, InMotion Hosting offers FREE private SSL certificates on all Shared Business Hosting, VPS Hosting, and Dedicated Server plans. IMH customers can now easily secure their websites for safe browsing with a single click. Features:
- Domain Validated SSL
- 256-bit Encryption
- Powered by Comodo and cPanel
- Free Automatic SSL Renewal
Offering free private SSL certificates is a great move by InMotion Hosting, and a must-have for ecommerce sites, as a free SSL certificate allows you to accept payments and complete online transactions worry-free.
Support and Customer Service
InMotion Hosting puts their customer service front and center in their marketing. They boast about US-based tech support via phone, chat, email, or ticket system. Anyone who has ever run a website understands that customer service and support is something that’s easy to overlook and skimp on upfront but you will always need support at some point, and when you need it you really need it.
And the tricky thing about all customer service is that it’s hard to judge it as a whole, because you never know when you just had a bad rep or when it’s indicative of a company’s culture (i.e., does the company view customer service as a cost or as an investment).
I started the human-based web chat, and was connected to a representative a few seconds later and got the information I needed. I later called InMotion’s technical support squad to learn the differences between shared and hosting. Someone quickly fielded my call and gently explained the differences in everyday language. I am very pleased with InMotion’s customer service.
This is one of the best web hosting services for ongoing customer support. The web hosting provider offers unrestricted 24/7 phone, email and chat support. Other available resources include video tutorials, FAQs, a knowledge base and user forums.
While InMotion Hosting offers free support, it does not offer pro support for its lower-tiered plans. Only the Pro plan has pro support and a service-level agreement that ensures 99.9% uptime or the company will credit you with free web hosting.
To test the quality of its support staff, we used both live chat and phone support. We purposely pushed the hosting package to its limits and called about any issues that came up. While many web hosting companies attempted to upsell us to more expensive plans, the InMotion rep pulled up our account and told us exactly what the problem was.
We were impressed with the knowledge the reps have, and they answered our questions quickly.
If you’ve ever had a site crash for no reason, you know there’s nothing more aggravating than trying to reach your provider and find out what went wrong. Waiting for live chat can really test your patience. As part of our Support Quality score, we calculated an average for how long it took to reach an agent.
The average time for live chat wait came out to be under three minutes. This takes into account reaching it at peak business hours, evenings and the early hours after midnight. InMotion has fast queues and helpful staff.
InMotion stands by its services with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you are purchasing a VPS, dedicated or reseller hosting package on a month-to-month basis, you can get a refund within your first 30 days.
If you are buying a shared business hosting plan, VPS plan, or reseller package with a six-month or longer term, then you get a 90-day full refund guarantee. Ninety days is a nice long time for a refund guarantee, so that gives you plenty of time to test out the service at no risk.
InMotion is not a perfect choice for hosting, but no host is. Every hosting company will have a few drawbacks—or more. The fact that there only are a few with InMotion is fantastic. The out-of-date templates in the web designer are no big deal since you can just use WordPress (or deal with the templates). And buying a year of hosting at a time is not so bad since there is a refund guarantee if you are unhappy for whatever reason.
As for advantages, InMotion has a lot going for it. It is an affordable way to host your site, there is plenty of flexibility in the plans, and the outstanding ease-of-use is a major plus. The free features are excellent, especially the backups.
As for customer service, I had a positive experience, and many other users have as well. So even with its minor drawbacks, I can highly recommend this hosting company, especially to WordPress bloggers!
With a perfect blend of low price and incredible innovation and technology, InMotion has been rising in the ranks of professional web hosting solutions for years. At the time of writing this review, they are running an awesome limited time offer!
If you are looking to get the best bang for your buck with your next web development project, it would be impossible to go wrong with a service like InMotion’s web hosting plans.
InMotion Hosting has nice SSD drives on their shared plans which give an added speed boost to your site. Their customer service and reputation are excellent in the shared space though they are higher priced than other shared hosts. If a little extra speed is worth a few dollars more a month, then they are a good choice for you.
In testing InMotion servers and account back-ends ourselves, there are a few things InMotion does that we especially appreciate. Automated and free data backups are included with each plan which we like to see since data security is important to us.
They also offer zero downtime site transfers which make switching to them or between their hosting plans a breeze. Finally, multiple datacenters and the ability to choose which will house your site appeals to speed-freaks like us.
Regardless of your hosting needs, InMotion hosting reviews seem to have it covered. If you value great hardware and support, all at a reasonable price, we highly recommend InMotion as your next host.
